# Migrate from Amazon SES to mySMTP

> Switch from Amazon SES SMTP to mySMTP. Update hostname, credentials, port, SPF, and DKIM. Export your suppression list and warm up your new IP for a clean cutover.

Moving from Amazon SES to mySMTP means updating your SMTP hostname, authentication method, and domain DNS records. This guide shows exactly what to change so nothing breaks during the transition.

## What changes

| Setting | Amazon SES (old) | mySMTP (new) |
| - | - | - |
| SMTP server | `email-smtp.<region>.amazonaws.com` | `relayxx.mysmtp.com` (from your setup email) |
| Shared IP (DK only) | `email-smtp.<region>.amazonaws.com` | `mail.mysmtp.com` |
| Port | `587` (recommended) or `465` or `2465` | `587` (STARTTLS, recommended) or `465` |
| Username | Your SES SMTP username | Your mySMTP SMTP username |
| Password | Your SES SMTP password | Your mySMTP SMTP password |
| SPF record | `v=spf1 include:amazonses.com ~all` | `v=spf1 include:spf1.mysmtp.com ~all` |
| SPF during transition | | `v=spf1 include:amazonses.com include:spf1.mysmtp.com ~all` |

<Note>
  Your real mySMTP hostname is in your setup email. Do not use `smtp.mysmtp.com`.
</Note>

## Before you cut over

1. **Export your suppression list** from Amazon SES (bounces, spam complaints, unsubscribes). Do not send to those addresses from mySMTP. mySMTP does not import suppression lists automatically.
2. **Verify DNS** for mySMTP. Add `include:spf1.mysmtp.com` to your existing SPF record (for example `v=spf1 include:amazonses.com include:spf1.mysmtp.com ~all`) and add mySMTP DKIM TXT/CNAME records. Keep Amazon SES records in place until the transition is stable.
3. **Test connectivity** with [test.smtp.ai](https://test.smtp.ai) using your mySMTP credentials.

## Cutover steps

<Steps>
  <Step title="Update application SMTP settings">
    Replace Amazon SES's `email-smtp.<region>.amazonaws.com` with your mySMTP hostname, enter your mySMTP username and password, and use port `587` with STARTTLS.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Send test messages">
    Send a few test emails to addresses you control. Verify headers, authentication passes, and messages land in the inbox.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Monitor delivery metrics">
    Watch bounces, complaints, and inbox placement for 24 to 72 hours. Use the [Email Header Analyzer](https://toolbox.smtp.ai/) in the mySMTP Deliverability Toolbox.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Warm up your dedicated IP">
    If you are on a dedicated IP plan (default), ramp volume gradually. See [Warm up plans](/deliverability/warm-up-plans) and use the [warm-up generator](https://toolbox.smtp.ai/#warmup-generator).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Remove Amazon SES DNS records">
    Once sending is stable and your reputation metrics are good, remove `include:amazonses.com` so your SPF record reads `v=spf1 include:spf1.mysmtp.com ~all`, and delete Amazon SES DKIM CNAME/TXT records.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="I used Amazon SES's HTTP API or SDK, not SMTP. What do I do?">
    mySMTP's HTTP API is coming in Q4 2026. For now, switch to SMTP by updating your integration to use the settings in the table above. See [Code examples](/email-configuration/code-examples) for libraries in PHP, Python, Node.js, .NET, and Java.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I keep Amazon SES as a backup during the transition?">
    Yes. Keep Amazon SES DNS records and credentials active while you warm up mySMTP. Only remove them after you confirm stable delivery.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do I need to change my from address?">
    No. You can keep the same from addresses and domains. Just make sure the domain's SPF and DKIM include mySMTP.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What if I see a spike in bounces after switching?">
    If you did not export and exclude your Amazon SES suppression list, you may be mailing known bad addresses. Pause sending, clean your list, and resume with a smaller volume.
